I am running for Taller de José, an organization that not only offers personal attention and referrals to people who have difficulty finding their way in a complex social system, but also offers companionship. Many of their clients do not speak English very well or feel that they don't have any rights as they have come to live in the USA illegally, or are afraid of reaching out for help. Rather than duplicate existing services, Taller de José seeks to collaborate with other agencies to make social services more accessible to a population in need. Each staff member, called a compañero/a, is trained to listen to clients to assess the services they need and then accompany them in the process of finding those resources. Whether the services they need be medical, legal, etc. Since the two offices of Taller are located in heavily latin (and specifically Mexican) neighborhoods in Chicago, a lot of their clients are Paisanos (Mexican). It is an organization I strongly believe in and would love to have your support.
My friend Kerry McGuire works for this organization and is found many times accompanying her clients to court, doctors appointments, whatever the case may be! She often has funny/crazy stories we are willing to share if you are interested!
You can read more about Taller and different client stories at: http://tallerdejose.org
If you can make it out, the Marathon will be October 13th! It really helps to have familiar faces cheering you on, you have no idea how much motivation comes from the audience!!
